The Essence of Valentine


You know on the 14 February of each year, the whole world in diaspora celebrates Valentine, but then again, a lot of young folks out there doesn't even know the true meaning of Valentine. Thereby, they celebrate it in a very wrong way, especially in the part of the world where I am from (Nigeria) people think that Valentine day is the day you go out and do some nasty things with your boyfriend or girlfriend, like having some kind of things that doesn't please God, taking too many drinks and so on. To them, they are really enjoying that what Valentine means to some people.

A lot of young folks has grown with that low mentality that Valentine's day is actually a day you go out with that special person boy/girlfriend and start having fun to proved they are more stronger when it comes to Valentine's day. But am writing this piece today to educate the ignorant people out there.

I want to correct that wrong impression and low mentality they have about Valentine. To be honest, having fun with your so called person is not definitely the best way to prove to that person that you cherish him or her. Am saying this right here and now, that having strange fun does not, I repeat does not in any way prove likeness. There are so many ways that person can prove undying love to the special one.

In others, Valentine's day is not a day for petting, but rather a day for you to actually take a look back in your relationship, and see if there are areas or factors you need to work on, to make sure that long relationship keeps blossoming.
But the major aim of Valentine's day is a day for you to actually go out and spread that love. For example, you can make peace with someone you offended or someone that offended you. Assuming you are having issues with your spouse, and you guys are staying apart, Valentine's day is a perfect day for you guys to let go of all the grudges and make peace.

And most importantly, Valentine's day is actually a day for you to reach out to the poor, show them, love put smiles on their faces and make their world worth while. For instance, you can visit the orphanage homes buy items like foods, clothes etc for them. You can as well visit those in the prison and hospitals, show them, same love, encourage them and make them believe that there is still hope for them. Now, this is the essence of Valentine and not the other way round. Chinenye Stellar.
